Wet vs. Dry Macular Degeneration: How We Diagnose and Manage Each Type

Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over 50. At Gulf Coast Retina Center, we specialize in diagnosing and managing both forms of age-related macular degeneration (AMD): dry and wet. Understanding the differences between these two types is key to early detection and personalized treatment.

Understanding Dry Macular Degeneration

Dry AMD is the most common form, accounting for nearly 80–90% of cases. It occurs when the light-sensitive cells in the macula gradually break down, often due to aging and thinning of the macular tissues. Patients may begin to notice blurry central vision, difficulty recognizing faces, or needing brighter light for reading.

Dry AMD is typically diagnosed during a comprehensive retinal exam. Our specialists use advanced imaging tools such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography to detect drusen (yellow deposits under the retina) and assess macular thinning.

While there’s no cure for dry AMD, lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements (AREDS2 formula) can slow progression. Regular monitoring is crucial, and we provide personalized guidance on diet, eye health, and smoking cessation to protect your vision.

What is Wet Macular Degeneration?

Wet AMD is less common but more severe. It develops when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, damaging the macula. This can cause rapid vision loss if not treated promptly.

Our team uses OCT and fluorescein angiography to detect fluid buildup, bleeding, and abnormal vessel growth beneath the retina. These imaging technologies help us distinguish wet AMD from its dry counterpart and determine the best course of action.

Wet AMD requires immediate treatment. We use intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF medications to block abnormal vessel growth and reduce fluid accumulation. With timely and consistent care, many patients experience stabilization or improvement in vision.
